Oak forest was a settlement that was founded in Gonzales Texas. Now this is found off of FM 90A just across the Guadalupe river, originally the dam began its life as a saw mill. Built by a man who had never gone to school or had any formal forum of education. The dam sits about 60 feet above the Guadalupe river. This is really impressive to be built by a man who had never had nor sook any education according to the owner of the property.
In the year of 1935 the dam failed after a flood had collapsed many of the vital parts of the dam and left it and the surrounding area devastated by the flood. The dam was later abandoned and soon followed the town. In the year 200o the local community had a population of about 25 residents.
We were lucky enough to run in to this gentleman while we were taking some photos of the other structures. He was kind enough to show us the property and take photos of what all remained there.
Even though this structure is located far off the beaten path, it has seen its fair share of vandalism as well as a fire in the late 60’s that was started in the store that is located adjacent to the dam now.
